Brad’s 10 Things to Know About “Selecting the Perfect Engagement Ring”

There are as many engagement rings as there are brides-to-be.  Remember, this ring is a highly significant piece of jewelry and it represents all of her dreams of the future, commitment, and above all else, love.  It is too big of a purchase not to get advice from a trusted source.  For more years than he cares to count, endless potential grooms have relied on Brad Jordan and Jordan Jewelers.

1. Choosing an Engagement Ring Style

Before looking at specific rings, it is a good idea to understand her personal taste. Start to listen any time she talks about jewelry. She probably has already expressed opinions and maybe even dropped hints on her dream ring. Pay attention to the jewelry she wears. Is she more of a silver jewelry girl than a yellow gold wearer? For guidance, think about the clothes she wears, the art she likes, and the styles she likes. Just tell Brad, and you will give him valuable clues to show you rings that are classic, modern, artsy, nature-inspired, simple, glamorous, or some combination of those.
Choosing the setting for the engagement ring is about showing off the precious stones to their best effect while reflecting her style. Jordan Jewelers has all the popular styles and will be happy to walk you through the features and benefits of each.

2. The setting is the foundation of your entire ring design.

The setting depends on personal style and preference—along with the wearer’s lifestyle. Lower settings often work better for active wearers and those that work with their hands or have outdoor lifestyles. High-set stones may be a great option if she has a less active lifestyle. Here at Jordan Jewelers, we offer a wide selection of settings from exceptional ring designers or we can also custom design a ring for you.

3. Determining her engagement ring size

Determining her ring size without asking is tricky, but not impossible. The most common women’s ring size is 6-6.5. If you are not sure, it is a good idea to order a size up. Jordan Jewelers offers free ring resizing for most rings. See Jordan Jewelers Resizing Policy.

4. Now for a little bit about the “rock”

The most classic and popular engagement ring style features a center diamond, which is always the safest place to start. But understanding your intended's style or if she wants something more unique will go a long way to increase the thrill when you present the ring. Brad will tell you that around 90% of engagement rings feature a diamond, while sapphires are the second most common engagement ring gemstone. If her taste runs to the unconventional, she may prefer something other than a diamond or sapphire engagement ring. Jordan Jewelers will be happy to show you all the options

5. Stone shapes - "But square cut or pear shape these rocks don't lose their shape."

Diamonds come in ten standard shapes. Round is the most common choice and are very popular, so they can be more expensive. To get more for your ring budget, look at selecting another beautiful shape stone. A popular one is the princess cut (which is square). Or consider a pear, cushion, round, princess, cushion, marquise, emerald, or heart cut – there is a diamond perfect for every engagement ring and its wearer.

6. Learn the 4C’s - diamond’s cut, carat , clarity, and color.

If you buy a ring without considering the 4C’s, it is like marrying a stranger--it might work, but it can be pretty risky. So, come in and talk to Brad. He loves sharing his knowledge and you will learn everything you need to know to pick the perfect diamond or other stone.

7. Choices for engagement ring metals are platinum, silver, white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold

To get a sense of what type of precious metal your girlfriend would prefer, pay attention to the jewelry she currently wears. All of our rings come in several different metals ranging from yellow, rose, or white gold, platinum, and silver. Today, platinum and white gold are the most popular choices. Although the two metals look very similar, platinum is more durable and more expensive.
